Sermon Notes

“In this passage from John 21:15–19, the relationship between Jesus and Peter is highlighted through a series of profound exchanges. Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him, using different Greek words for love—AGAPAS (a selfless, unconditional love) and PHILEO (a brotherly affection). Each time Peter affirms his love, Jesus gives him a command: “Feed My lambs,” “Tend My sheep,” and “Feed My sheep.” This act of restoration shows that Jesus, despite Peter’s previous denial, still entrusts him with the care of His followers. Peter is also shown his future destiny, including the manner of his death, which would ultimately glorify God. Jesus closes by calling Peter to follow Him.

The message throughout the passage emphasizes Jesus’ love for Peter despite his failure, and His directive for Peter to nurture the disciples with love and care. Jesus’ actions illustrate the deep care and responsibility that come with love, as He continues to guide and equip His disciples for the future.
