Sermon Notes

SCRIPTURE: ACTS 1:5, 8; ACTS 2:1-4; ACTS 2:38-40

Acts 1:5 (NIV)
For John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 1:8 (NIV)
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 2:1–4 (NIV)
When the day of Pentecost came; they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

PRE-STORY

  1. Jesus appeared over forty days to speak to them about the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God was a vital teaching for the entire ministry of Jesus.
  1. He told them to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit. He gave them no timeline, just be patient. Anticipate the coming.
  1. Their sins had been forgiven and they had been baptized. This seems to be the prerequisite for the Holy Spirit Baptism though not always in the same order.
  1. They wanted to know about the end of all things and Jesus said NO. This information would distract them from their mission, so God keeps it to himself.
  1. Jesus told them that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit would enable (empower them) them to be witnesses to the world. They had no idea how difficult is was about to become.
  1. ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST—A Sound (rushing wind), A Visual Sign (appeared to be tongues of fire), and Semantic miracle (they spoke a previously unknown language)
  1. Onlookers – What is this about? They are drunk!! Onlookers still mock those who are filled with the Holy Spirit. Azusa Street is still mocked by many.
  1. We should never be ashamed of a genuine outpouring of God Spirit.
  1. Then Peter got up to instruct the people about what they should do:

Acts 2:38–40 (NIV)
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. AND you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”

  1. Repentance and Baptism in the Name of Jesus Christ.
    1. How did the first ecclesia receive…?
    2. They were all together.
    3. You must believe.
    4. You must reject your sins. (repent)
    5. You should be baptized in water.
    6. The timing of the Gift is up to Jesus.
  1. The Gift of the Holy Spirit received.
    1. The initial evidence in almost every case was speaking in a language they did not know.
    2. But the gift was much more than speaking in tongues.
    3. It was an empowerment to boldly go…where no man had gone before. They received a steeling of their spines.
  1. This Gift is for everyone that the Lord our God shall call.
    1. The promise is for you.
    2. The promise is for your children.
    3. The promise is for everyone the Lord will call in the future.
  1. Save yourself from this corrupt generation.
    1. More than any other time, this part of the sermon fits our situation.
    2. I must forsake any philosophy or theology that leads me away from God, the Bible or the Ecclesia (the church... which is enabled with the power that the gates of hell will not prevail against—the Holy Spirit)
    3. If that same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwell in you, He will quicken your mortal body!!
