I have got such a great show for you, and I can’t wait to introduce one of today’s great musicians to you. If you are not familiar with the music of Phil Keaggy, believe me, you are in for a treat. If you ARE familiar with him, you are in for a treat, too, because you are going to get to hear him in a way that you probably never have…because Phil and I had a chance to talk last week for over an hour, and you are going to get to know another dimension of this remarkably gifted man.
During our conversation, we talked about many different musicians, and I have woven some clips of most of them into our conversation, so you’re going to get to sample many different artists and genres today. Kind of an audio smorgasborg. I hope you like it, and I hope you’ll give me feedback. Call me toll free at 877-433-9091, or email me at steve.lifespring@gmail.com.
By the way, I mention in the show that the new CD, Phantasmagorical, will be released “any minute.” The CD is NOW AVAILABLE! Buy it now here or here!
One of the best histories of the gospel song era is George Stebbins’ autobiography, Reminiscences and Gospel Hymn Stories. Stebbins was born in ht e mid-1880s in New York and showed early musical prowess. At age twenty-three, he moved to Chicago where he worked in churches and became acquainted with some of the “greats” of gospel music, such as Sankey and Bliss. In the late 1870s, D. L. Moody got hold of him, sending him into a lifetime of music evangelism.
Listen to the show for Stebbins’ account of the first time he and D. L. Moody ministered together, and how “Jesus, I Come” came to be written.
Lyrics: William T. Sleeper
Music: George C. Stebbins
Out of my bondage, sorrow and night,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into Thy freedom, gladness, and light,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of my sickness, into Thy health,
Out of my want and into Thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into Thyself,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of my shameful failure and loss,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the glorious gain of Thy cross,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of earth’s sorrows, into Thy balm,
Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm,
Out of distress to jubilant psalm,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into Thy blessed will to abide,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of myself to dwell in Thy love,
Out of despair, into raptures above,
Upward for aye on wings like a dove,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the joy and light of Thy home,
Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of the depths of ruin untold,
Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold,
Ever Thy glorious face to behold,
Jesus, I come to Thee.
A gardener devotes time, attention, and care to his garden. He tills, he sows, he waters, he feeds, he weeds, he watches for and eradicates insects or other creatures that might threaten the garden. It’s a never ending responsibility, and one that the Father has taken on willingly. Listen to the words of Jesus:
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”
Here Jesus says that God the Father, as a gardener, had to prune away unfruitful branches. Jesus has unfruitful branches? How could that be? Listen further… “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.”
So God, as a loving Father and diligent Gardener, wants to prune away those things in our lives which are unfruitful. All we must do is remain in Jesus, and God will help us to be fruitful.
This show is a great pick-me-up for your weekend. Great music, I guarantee! Bryan Duncan, Visible From Space, John Schlitt, Busbee, Derek Daisey, Naima, DavidWilliam, The Rock, and the musician’s musician, Phil Keaggy with a cut from the yet-to-be-released “Phantasmagorical” CD.
John Schlitt is a name that, for many people conjures up memories of a hard rockin’ band from the midwest called Head East. I think their biggest hit was Never Been Any Reason, which is still played by classic rock stations around the country. John was one of the founding members, the lead singer, of Head East in August of 1969, but left the band to go to school not long after, only to return in 1973, after earning a degree in civil engineering. Head East has a reputation for putting on unbelievable shows. High energy, high volume, rockin’ music, that crowds love.
Several years later, as John relates in today’s show, the already award winning Christian rock band, Petra, called and asked him to join them as their new lead singer.
Petra played their last gig in 2007, but John Schlitt has released his third solo effort with “The Grafting”. Listen to the show to hear John tell his story, talk about this great new project, and hear some of the songs.
